Your question was:  WHICH IS BETTER FOR WEIGHT LOSS LOWER WEIGHTS AT A FASTER PACE OR HIGHER WEIGHTS AT A SLOWER PACE.
The reply has to do with energy in-energy out.  The longer you workout and the more muscle mass you include, the more calories and fat you will lose.  If you can do a larger range of motion with smaller weights (say 2 pounders moving in the range of 3 ft for each pump or movement cycle)and can work out longer (say 20 minutes) but you can only move 5 pounds, one foot for 5 minutes - then the lighter weight would be more effective for weight loss.  By altering the variables of weight size and frequency you add new variables. For instance, if you can only pump 5 pound weights 70 times a minute (1-2 feet) but you can move the 2 pounders 3-4 feet 120 times a minute - you'll do a lot more total WORK using 2 pounders.  Your initial strength and endurance works into the mix of variables.
It's motivating to mix up your routine. Light/heavy does not have to be an either/or decision. Mix up light and heavy, slow and fast, and vary your dips, leans and range of motion. You'll work out longer and probably more often. In the end you'll lose more weight (as long as you don't add more workout with the fork at the dining room table!
Moderate eating using a sensible plan that suits you is one of the best weight loss components in your routine. For more see http://www.heavyhandsfitness.com/hhwl.htm

Have you a Heavyhands story to share?
Here's one from Jason - we're pleased to share it.
Hey guys, just a quick bit of inspiration. I've been doing heavyhands sinceNov. '03, about nine months. When I started I weighed 205(at 6') with a thick chest from doing 200 push-ups a day for years, but also an increasingly noticeable layer of fat on my stomach. I started with 2# for pump n' walk inplace 30 min. 6 days a week. I've now built up to 5# pump n' jog slowly for 30 min. followed by 10 min. of 12# pump n' walk. I do this 6 days a week.Without any diet modification I've lost 11 pounds. I know my arm strength has improved, but last night while brushing my teeth I was flexing my arms-WHOA! my arms were the biggest, most defined ever. My veins were the size ofCheetohs. My wife did a double take. If one trains sensibly and consistentlyHH is definately a great investment of time.

Questions for Dr. Schwartz:
A few questions about "heavyhands":

1) I have the original book from decades ago. How different will be
the new "revised" version?

2) Pavel Tsatsouline has spoken highly of Dr. Schwartz. Tsatsouline
himself advocates both slow-speed, low-rep and fast-tempo, high-rep
exercises using dumbbells or "kettlebells" weighing 18 lbs. and more (to
90 lbs. or so). Are you familiar with any of his work? If so, do you
have any comments?

Thanks for your time.

Reply from Dr. Schwartz:Thanks for the good questions! Still working as much as I can to redo the original heavyhands text.
I've been kinda surprised at the number of mostly small revisions that are necessary!

The new book should contain more on the energy costs of 'hh' as relates to the exercise dominated self treatment of the overweight condition. Pavel Tsatsouline and I talk frequently. We have the greatest respect for each other's work. Longstrength® will be another major entry because I think we're a population just ready for the fusion of strength, endurance and flexibility, and it continues to make sense to me as I enter my 80th year!

Issues like exercise to music and TV will be expanded in the next text. Thanks for your interest, and good luck and great health!

best,
Len Schwartz

Super article on Dr. Schwartz:
Parker Reed has done a fine interview with Dr. Schwartz. His article resulting from that interview is available online at http://www.cbass.com/SchwartzInterview.htm . It's well worth reading! Get to know Len Schwartz and the origins (and future direction) of Heavyhands.
